Generally, the award is made to about a dozen Icelandic citizens on each occasion. In addition, the president confers the award on a few foreign nationals each year. Special rules are in force between Iceland and some other European countries on the mutual conferral of their respective order in connection with state visits. The Order of the Falcon is conferred in five grades.
